New York nursing home workers arrested

Elder abuse is a serious concern for those who must use nursing facilities to provide for the daily care of their loved ones. New York's attorney general has announced the arrests of workers from two facilities in cases involving the alleged abuse of residents. In both cases, images of the residents were reportedly taken while the individuals were mistreated by the workers in question. Misdemeanor and felony charges have been filed.

In the first of these nursing home neglect cases, the workers in question, both men, have been accused of taking humiliating pictures of residents as they posed in bed with the residents while touching them inappropriately. In the second case, video was allegedly taken as a male and female worker taunted a resident. The resident was reportedly agitated to the point of reacting violently with the potential for suffering physically as a result. Other cases in recent years have been prosecuted in the state, some of them involving the use of social media to publicize images of nursing home residents. The facilities in question report that they have clear prohibitions related to employees photographing or recording residents.

Nursing home care can be challenging because of issues such as overcrowding and inadequate staffing. In many cases, elder neglect occurs because of the lack of resources to properly manage the patient load. However, abuses can occur as those with access to patients mistreat them through verbal or physical means. The conditions of some patients may prevent them from communicating these issues to those with the power to stop such elder abuse situations.

A loved one might work with a lawyer if there is a suspicion of neglect or abuse in a nursing home. A lawyer might investigate facility records to identify staffing problems. Additionally, a lawyer might review medical records to pinpoint issues such as improper medication use.
